Mess Kit Buying Guide

Purpose

You need to consider what you need from your mess kit.  How many campers will use it?  Are you doing significant hiking or backpacking with a load?  Are you planning to cook or do you just require a kit with dishes and utensils?

Some kits are very minimal, with few pieces, and designed to be ultralight.  Others have more extensive cookware, dishes, and utensils, and may even include a small stove.  In some cases, the kit may be so large that it is only suitable for camping or picnicking and can only be hand-carried a short distance comfortably.

Types of Pieces

When you determine the answers to the questions above and the purpose of your mess kit, you’ll need to decide which pots, pans, dishware, and other pieces you want to be included.  Especially for hiking and backpacking, you should look for an efficient, compact package that is easily transported with the most important components.

Some items for consideration to include are:

  • a pot and skillet, lids
  • eating utensils like a knife, fork, spoon, or spork (a combination of a knife, fork, and spoon)
  • serving and opening utensils like ladles, serving spoons, bottle openers, or corkscrews
  • bowls, cups
  • sponge or other cleaning items
  • carry bag
  • portable camping stove

Materials

Anodized Aluminum is commonly used in mess kit pots and pans.  It is lightweight, durable, and distributes heat well, as well as being affordable.  Standard aluminum is not quite as hard and durable and more prone to warping and dents.

Stainless Steel is more durable and scratch-resistant than aluminum, and is not expensive but has the disadvantage of being heavier, making it less likely to be included in the mess kits most suitable for hiking or backpacking.

Titanium is by far the lightest of these three, exceptionally durable, and corrosion and rust-resistant, as well.  It is unfortunately prone to uneven heating and hotspots and more decisively, much more expensive, so not included in any of the mess kits reviewed here.

Non-Stick Coatings are often employed on mess kit skillets and pots.  They usually make clean-up much easier.  Historically Teflon has had a reputation for posing some risks.  Today that is no longer the case.  Teflon produced after 2013 has been declared to have no harmful effects if used at normal cooking temperatures.

Plastic is often used for utensils and dinnerware in mess kits. Look for BPA-free plastic as a safety measure.

Silicone is another material that is used in some dinnerware.  It is compressible making it easy to pack in a small place.  The Gear4U 14 Piece Cookware Kit reviewed above has a collapsible silicone cup.

Women’s Swim Shorts Buying Guide

“Swim shorts” as a term covers a fairly broad spectrum of women’s swimwear apparel.  It can include anything from very skimpy bikini bottoms to knee-length board shorts suitable for surfing and a range of water sports.  The aim here in this review is to present a range that is functional for swimming, has a degree of versatility for use out of the water, and at the same time expresses women’s styling.

Materials

Most women’s swim shorts use Nylon or Polyester for their lightweight and durability.  To have a bit of stretch and elasticity for a comfortable fit, often manufacturers employ a mix of Nylon or Polyester with Spandex or Elastane.  These fabrics are generally breathable and quick-drying enabling a more comfortable and aerated transition from the water to the shore.

Features

Lining:  Many women’s swim shorts do not include a liner.  Some swimmers find that less body-conforming designs are more comfortable when they are lined.  In the case of the skimpier more conforming designs, a liner can serve to protect modesty.

Length:  Designs are available with less than a 2-inch inseam up to 10 or more inches.  Folks involved in board sports tend to use shorts with longer legs.  To a degree, it is a matter of your own style and preference and perhaps the level of modesty required.

Closure:  Most designs rely on a drawstring or lace-up string.  In some cases, all or part of the waistline is elasticized, sometimes with that being the lone method of securing them in position.

Pockets:  These are quite handy for storing small essentials and their presence and size are in part determined by how long the shorts are.  The shortest and most conforming designs simply allow minimal room for pockets.  It is often easy to incorporate side-seam pockets and when space is available larger cargo pockets.

UV Protection:  For long days in the sun, protection from its rays on portions of your body that rarely get exposure is an important factor.  Fabrics with UPF50+ protection provide a high level.

Pricing:  Unless you are especially interested in premium designer brand names, it is pretty easy to purchase good quality attractive swim shorts at a reasonable price.  All the models in this review have retail prices from $10 to $54.

Style:  Using the swim shorts reviewed here as an example, you can see that there is a pretty good variety to choose from.  Most models come in a range of sizes to accommodate from very small to fairly large bodies with some able to fit plus-sized physiques.  You can find very conforming bikini-like designs up to knee-length board shorts and all levels in between.  There are colors and prints to suit everyone and keep in mind that you are left with the choice of what sort of top you want to accompany your shorts.

Fit:  When you don’t have a chance to try them on first, such as when purchasing online, it is a good idea to have an accurate waist measurement as a starter.  Most manufacturers provide a lot of sizing guidelines to help you get a good fit.  You can also check the buyer’s comments on Amazon for ideas or directly contact the seller with any questions if need be.

Surfer - Best Soft Top Surfboards

Updated September 1, 2024

Soft top surfboards or “foamies” are a great option for all surfers but especially for beginners. Unlike just after they were developed, foamies today are durable, full of performance features, and have the benefit of being softer than fiberglass or epoxy-finished boards, thereby being less injurious to the surfer after a wipe-out or to others in the range of getting hit.

To help in selecting the right model for your surfing level and style, some of the best are introduced below.  Starting with a simple comparison table, there are descriptions with key features, photos, and videos, followed by a buying guide.

If you have any questions or concerns, please use the comments section at the bottom.  I’d love to know your thoughts.

Soft Top Surfboard Buying Guide

Why Choose a Soft Top Surfboard?

There are several advantages soft tops have over hard top boards and a few disadvantages.

Why a Soft Surfboard Might Be Right For You

Advantages

  • Cheaper – Generally the most expensive soft top boards will still be cheaper than run-of-the-mill hard top models.
  • Stability – Being heavier and of greater volume, they are more buoyant and stable, making it easier for the less experienced to mount and use.
  • Safer Against Head Trauma – When you fall off your soft top board and it smacks you on the head, the injury is likely to be minor compared to what can happen when the fiberglass, epoxy, or wood used in hard top boards makes contact.  In addition, damages to other surfers or their boards are mitigated.

Disadvantages

  • Durability – They tend to absorb water more easily than hard tops which will destroy integrity.  On the other hand not being as brittle as hard boards they are less likely to break in a way that catastrophically damages the board.
  • Heavier – Carrying them around will take more effort.
  • Performance – The latest developments in design for tweaking the performance of surfboards generally come to hard top boards first.

Materials

Soft-top surfboards are constructed with a foam core and have a soft foam deck and slick bottom. Three of the best and most commonly used materials are:

  • EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is commonly used in the core. It is light and has been through many technological improvements since it was originally developed.  Today the best is sealed and not as prone to water absorption.
  • IXPE (Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene) is a fine-celled microcellular foam that is waterproof, shock-absorbent, and thermally insulating, making it a good material for the deck of the board.
  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is the standard material used on the bottom. It is durable, weather and impact-resistant, and can be refined to a slick, smooth surface.

There are other similar materials in use including composites.

Designs

Soft top surfboards can be put into 3 basic categories based on length.

  • Longboards are 8 feet or longer and will be the widest and thickest and easiest for beginners to use and develop basic skills on.  These boards are stable and fast but don’t have as much maneuverability as shorter boards.
  • Fun Boards are in the size range between 6 and 8 feet and offer more maneuverability but less speed.  Typically riders with a little experience will fare better.
  • Short Boards are 6 feet and under.  These are yet more maneuverable and less stable and require a greater skill set.

Different Types of Surfboards and Surfing

Volume

Volume is calculated roughly by multiplying the length times the width times the thickness of the board.  The higher the volume the better it will float and the less the resistance in moving through the water.

Weight Capacity

The weight capacity of a surfboard is largely determined by the volume.  The greater the volume the larger the weight the board can tolerate and still perform well.  Manufacturers will provide guidelines.  If you are a beginner these guidelines would best not be exceeded.  With more experience, you can get away with loading a weight higher than what is recommended.

Fin Configurations

Depending on your style of surfing and the type of board, different fin setups will be most effective.

  • Longboards usually come with a single long fin or a 3-fin thruster set up with a fin toward the back of the board and 2 fins forward one on each side.  The single-fin version provides tracking and stability.  When the other two are added in the thruster formation there is a better turning capability and maneuverability generally.
  • Fun Boards are usually set up with a thruster configuration for their 6-8 foot length to facilitate maneuverability.
  • Short Boards often also use the thruster setup.  Some, especially fishtail boards, use twin fins, one on each side.  This increases maneuverability but sacrifices stability.  Other models use quad fins, two on each side.  This setup delivers similar maneuverability but adds to stability and tracking without sacrificing speed.

When most people think about Vancouver diving, the first thing that comes to mind is diving on Vancouver Island.  Not many are aware that within a few minutes of downtown Vancouver is a surprising variety of dive sites to satisfy all levels of divers from the most experienced to an absolute newbie.  There are dozens of sites right off the shore along Highway 99 from Larsen Bay all the way past Porteau and dozens more easily accessible by boat within an hour.

Steep walls, pinnacles, wrecks, and sandy bottoms provide excellent habitats for over 200 marine animals.  Many are marine protected areas and some have mooring buoys to preserve the rich invertebrate life including egg-yolk jellyfish, gorgonians, and multiple species of anemone, crab, shrimp, nudibranch, barnacle, sea star, tubeworms, and many others.  The reefs are also home to giant Pacific octopus, wolf eels, rockfish, lingcod, six-gill sharks, dogfish, sculpins, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and several species of whale and dolphin.

Seasons and Conditions

It is possible to dive year-round, but obviously, it is quite a bit cooler in the winter.

Air temperatures reach average highs of 7°C (45°F) in December and January and 22°C (72°F) in July and August.

Water temperatures reach highs of 12-18°C (54-64°F) in summer and 6-9°C (43-49°F) in winter.  A few divers will go with a 7 mm wetsuit in summer, but most will opt for a dry suit, heavy hoods, and gloves year-round.

The driest time of the year is from May through September.

Visibility is quite variable based on the tide, algal blooms, and wind.  It tends to be best in winter reaching 21 meters (70 feet). The range in summer is from 3-15 meters (10-50 feet).  At slack tide, visibility tends to be better.

The biggest tidal exchanges are in the spring and fall which affect the current, though it is not usually strong.

Diving is available to suit all levels.

There are a number of dive shops operating in Vancouver that provide a full range of dive courses, equipment rental, and guiding from shore and by boat in Howe Sound.

Whistler and go skiing, hike the “Grouse Grind,” cycle Stanley Park, Shop in Gastown, enjoy authentic Chinese food in Chinatown, kayak in Deep Cove, have High Tea at the Fairmont Hotel, shop at Granville Public Market or Richmond Night Market, Hike Lynn Canyon, visit Van Dusen Botanical Gardens or the Vancouver Aquarium, listen to music at the Commodore Ballroom, watch a Canucks hockey game, run in Spirit Park, tour Christ Church Cathedral, eat lunch on Commercial Drive . . . . . .   Check out the video below for a glimpse of life in Vancouver and a few additional leisure options.

The Best Diving in Dominica

Dominica Coral Reef
Dominica Coral Reef

Updated April 20, 2022

This is the thirty-third in a series of reviews of the best scuba diving destinations around the world.  In this post, the focus is on Dominica.

In addition to this series on dive resort locations, the best worldwide liveaboard dive locations and services are reviewed in their own series.  To check them out, or others in this series, click on Liveaboards / Resorts on the menu at the top and choose a title from the list.

Have you ever been scuba diving in Dominica?  If so, I’d love to know about your experience.  What dive shop or liveaboard did you use?  Which dive spots are the best and what are the conditions there regarding the visibility, current, water temperature, sealife attractions, etc.?  Please post your response in the comments section at the bottom and we’ll all learn something we can use.

The Best Diving in Dominica

Location

Situated in the Lesser Antilles between the Windward Islands of Guadalupe and Martinique, Dominica is geologically the youngest of the group.  Formed by volcanic activity, geothermal forces in the form of hot springs are still evident at Boiling Lake and the Champagne dive site.  There are 300 miles (188 km) of trails running through the lush mountain rainforest with hundreds of waterfalls and rivers and endemic creatures like the national bird, the Sisserou Parrot.  The Republic covers 290 square miles (750 square kilometers) with a population of 72,000 English-speaking citizens.  Creole, a French-based language, and Kokay, an English-based one, are also spoken.  A small group descended from the original Carib Indians still has a small settlement on the eastern side.

In comparison to the other island nations in the region, Dominica has a low per capita GDP with its foundation mostly in bananas and agriculture. A major economic initiative started in 2006 which pushed into new fruits, coffee, patchouli, aloe vera, and a few other crops, and an emphasis on offshore and financial services, and tourism.  Without a lot of sandy beaches, ecotourism has been a focus.

Undersea World

Recognized by many as one of the top 10 dive areas in the world, Dominica is known for beautiful coral reefs, volcanic subsea terrain with hot springs, and a rich variety of marine life including 22 species of whale.  Most of the best sites are on the west side where currents are mild, with the most sites in the southwest section.

The volcanic topography includes canyons, volcanic craters, steep walls, arches, pinnacles, and bubbles emerging from hot springs in several locations.  The encrusting invertebrate life is impressive with rich hard and soft corals, gorgonians, huge barrel sponges, and other colorful tube and pipe sponges.

Several marine sanctuaries help preserve the pristine marine life which includes a long list of highlights including macro critters like seahorses, frogfish, flying gurnards, huge crabs, spiny lobsters, scorpionfish, octopus, reef squid, moray eels, spotted flamingo tongue snails, and Peterson cleaner shrimp.  There are reef tropicals like sargassum triggerfish, French grunts, parrotfish, pufferfish, yellowtail and mahogany snappers, blackbar soldierfish, black durgons, Creole wrasses, and chub along with barracuda, jacks, stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks, 4 species of turtles, spinner dolphins, 22 species of whale, with sperm whales in residence year-round.

Seasons and Conditions

It is warm year-round with daytime temperatures between 24-32°C (75-90°F).  The mountains are a bit cooler.  Accordingly, water temperatures are also warm in a tight range of 26-29°C (78-84°F).  The best time to dive is from December to May.  July to October is the rainy season with the dry from December to April.   Visibility is generally quite good at 18-30 meters (60-100 feet) with the low end coming during rains.  Current is mild to non-existent most of the time but can be strong.

Liveaboard Diving

Dominica is not an area renowned for liveaboard diving, but there are many cruises in other areas around the Caribbean.  Below are several great yachts to check out:

Dominica Transportation, Lodging, and Diving Services

Transportation

There are two regional airports in Dominica: Douglas-Charles Airport, previously called Melville Hall Airport, in the northeast, and Canefield Airport near Roseau.  They handle flights from Puerto Rico and other Caribbean Airports.

On Dominica, there is a system of convenient and reasonably priced minibusses for transportation around and across the island.

Lodging and Dive Shops

Many of the available hotels are located in the Roseau area and start from $50/night on up.  As for diving, there are several dive shops, most of which are in the southwest area near Roseau.  Anchorage Hotel also has an in-house dive center.

This website is a good source for the available options and can arrange a booking:

Dominica Things To Do (aside from scuba diving)

The natural environment featuring volcanic activity is the main attraction, aside from diving.  There are many waterfalls including Trafalgar Falls, Victoria Falls, and Emerald Pool.  Morne Trois Pitons National Park has Boiling Lake.  Geothermal springs, known as sulfur springs are available in many locations. Hiking into the mountains or along the coastline is popular.  Of course cruises and beach and seaside activities including whale watching are awaiting. There are various tours, historic sites, botanical gardens, markets, restaurants, and city activities in Roseau. Popular sports are cricket, netball, basketball, rugby, tennis, and soccer. This list leaves out quite a few.  Check out the video below.
