Inflatable Boat Launching Wheels Buying Guide
An inflatable boat launching system can help you to much more easily and with a minimum of effort to move your boat from one place to another onshore. It could be to and from your car or a storage area to the water’s edge or anytime you want it to change locations.
Then from the shoreline, it will enable launching it directly into the water.
The wheels will also help protect your boat from damage by eliminating any dragging across terrain both above and below the surface.
Weight Capacity and Boat Size
Boat launching wheels are all rated by the manufacturer for a maximum weight capacity based on the durability of construction materials and design. You need to make sure the system you select can handle your boat’s weight and also any motor, gear, and baggage that will be onboard when you move it.
The models reviewed here are designed for movement off-road, without the capacity to be legally towed by a vehicle on a public road. They have a range of weight capacities from 250 to 600 pounds and can handle inflatables in that range and some other small vessels. The manufacturer will often give length guidelines, as well.
Wheel Size, Tires, and Materials
The wheels employed for boat launching wheels in the capacity range for inflatables usually run from 10 to 15 inches in diameter and 2 to 4 inches in width. The most suitable for all-around use on a variety of terrain will be wider and have tread that can accommodate hard and soft surfaces.
Solid and inflatable tires are both used and can be made of rubber, plastic, or other materials. There are pros and cons to each. The most important feature for good all-terrain use, in my opinion, is wide tires.
On some of the cheaper models available, you may find very small wheels which probably won’t perform well off of paved or hard, smooth surfaces, and thereby would not be advisable for launching your boat.
Material
For materials aside from the wheels, the major factors to look for are durability and resistance to corrosion, and exposure to saltwater. Aluminum and stainless steel can fill the bill on both counts. Both are sturdy with aluminum more lightweight. For stainless steel, powder-coating or some other corrosion-resistant feature is important.
Installation
Before purchasing boat launching wheels, make sure they are compatible with your vessel making sure that they won’t conflict with your motor. Both your boat and the boat launching wheels will likely come with some advice for where and how the mounting should be executed.
Make sure to read the instructions provided carefully and follow basic construction axioms like “measure twice and drill once.” It should not be especially difficult but if you are mechanically challenged, it would be safest to ask for help. When purchasing online you can check with customer feedback or ask the seller for advice, and that will often suffice.
Here’s an example of how it is done very professionally:
