A number of fabrics are used in board shorts including polyester, nylon, cotton, and elasticized fabrics like spandex and elastane.

Because they are durable, lightweight, and quick-drying, polyester and nylon have an overall advantage. Cotton has the benefit of being breathable but is less likely to be employed. These fabrics are often combined with spandex or elastane to create a flexible 2-way or 4-way stretch fabric that can move with your body for a more comfortable feel by decreasing friction.

Size and Comfort

Soft, stretchy material feels more comfortable on the skin with more freedom of movement and less friction.

Most board shorts are available in a wide range of waist sizes. Sometimes buyers who are purchasing online or otherwise don’t have a chance to try them on first and run into problems finding the correct size. Most manufacturers provide some guidelines to help. Otherwise, comments from other buyers can be consulted or you can directly ask the seller about your measurements and sizing needs.

Length is also a consideration. The outseam length for board shorts ranges from around 18 to 24 inches, usually from 18 to 22 inches. Some surfers prefer knee-length and some prefer shorter. One major reason for the popularity of board shorts is their versatility. They are not only suitable for board sports and a variety of other water sports and water-related activities but also just for showing a little style at the beach or around the pool.

If you are surfing on a standard surfboard or bodyboard where you have significant body contact with the board, long board shorts will serve you best. For other board sports with less body contact like SUP, windsurfing, or skimboarding, a shorter length allowing for more breathability is probably your best choice.

Style

Board shorts come in a huge variety of colors and patterns that give you a chance to really express your sense of style. Unlike swim trunks and swimsuits, they are often versatile enough to wear away from the beach or pool or even to a restaurant or shopping area without requiring you to change clothes.

Design

There is considerable variation in the design of camping shower tents. You need to consider which features are most important. Ease of setup and breakdown is important. Pop-up tents provide virtually instantaneous setup and easy breakdown and storage. Other designs require substantially more time and are more complicated. How big does your tent need to be? Would two rooms be more suitable? How tall are the users? Some designs have very limited height and roominess. What kind of ventilation is there? Are there places to stow accessories? What is the purpose, bathing, changing, toileting, or all three?

Materials

Fabric: The use of a durable grade of polyester or nylon is most effective in the construction of shower tents. Both are quick-drying with a degree of water resistance. Look for coatings and treatments to bolster waterproofing such as a PU coating and others. UV protection is another feature to look for that many of the best designs incorporate.

Poles/Frame: They have to be strong enough to support the weight of any water reservoir that could be mounted and generally stand up to the wind and conditions while maintaining the structure of the tent. Aluminum, steel, and fiberglass are all employed. All can be fabricated with enough strength and durability. Aluminum and fiberglass have the advantage of being impossible to rust or corrode. Aluminum is usually the most lightweight. If steel is employed, look for corrugation or some sort of coating to increase rust resistance.

Weight, Packed Size, and Portability

If you are a hiker or backpacker, the portability of your camping shower tent is especially important. In that case, the size of the packed tent and the weight are major considerations in selection.

Most campers or users of shower tents are probably using a vehicle for the major portion of the journey making these factors less important. Nonetheless, a lighter, smaller package is much easier and more convenient to transport and stow in your vehicle.

Wind Resistance

Most camping shower tents are narrow, tall, and lightweight making them especially susceptible to the wind. While many have self-supporting designs, it is important that stakes, guylines, and/or sandbags are included for added stability when conditions call for them.

Ventilation

A shower tent is a naturally moist environment. When it is used for toileting as well, the aroma is also a concern. For these reasons and to generally keep it fresh, the air circulation provided by effective ventilation is important. Mesh windows and vents are features to look for to achieve effective airflow.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)

GNSS refers to the whole range of satellite systems that these handheld devices can connect to for positioning support. Historically GPS (US) has been the dominant system. Today there are many others including GLONASS (Russia), QZSS (Japan), Galileo (EU), BeiDou (China), and others. Some of the devices available rely on only GPS but if yours can get support from more than one of these systems, it is more likely that regardless of the terrain you will have a greater ability to connect with the most precise location fix.

Touchscreen Versus Buttons

The touchscreen interface is becoming more and more prevalent in the marketplace. Navigation is intuitive and faster especially when typing is required. In cold weather the use of gloves can be a hindrance, however, some models are compatible with glove use. Buttons can be more durable and some users find pushing buttons to navigate is easier or better suits their style. Of the models reviewed here only the Garmin eTrex 35t and Garmin Montana 700 offer the touchscreen feature.

Display

Large screen size is especially useful for hunting, boating, and motorized activities where more details and information are more easily visible at a glance. For hiking and backpacking where a lightweight and compact size are priorities, smaller displays are the norm. Regardless of the size, you want a clear, bright display. Monochrome screens are still in use and are battery-efficient but often lack clarity. Larger, color displays can be seen more easily and those that perform well in bright sunlight or are backlit for night use are desirable. The downside is that these are more expensive.

Battery Type and Battery Life

For many of the adventures that involve a handheld GPS, there is not a good opportunity to recharge the batteries. Historically AA and AAA batteries were the norms that had the advantage of being easily switched out when the power is drained.

Today there are models that use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that can be charged at home or on the go. If you have to bring a charger with you it can be a major inconvenience depending on your mission. Solar panels and power banks are an option for some models.

There are devices that can operate on both rechargeable and disposable batteries.

It’s important to know how much battery life you have at your disposal and the differences in usage time in the various modes.

Mapping and Memory

Most handheld GPS devices come with a base map loaded with at least some basic local features like points of interest, elevation, and roads or trails. Many include additional preloaded maps and/or the possibility of uploading more later that can provide more detail and customization.

Much of the data saved in a handheld device is in the form of waypoints, routes, and similar data that requires a certain amount of memory. Additional maps that can be loaded may require more memory than your device has built-in. Most of the best modern devices allow for the use of a MicroSD slot for the necessary expandable memory to add more maps.

Messaging and Emergency Features

A number of GPS handheld devices have the ability to transmit and sometimes receive messages via satellite, which is especially useful when cell phone service is not accessible. The service can also include an SOS trigger for emergencies. Often requiring a paid subscription, it is available on the Garmin inReach Mini and Garmin inReach Explorer+ devices reviewed above.

Altimeter, Barometer, and Compass (ABC)

Many handheld devices above the most basic level have a barometric sensor that measures barometric pressure allowing calculation of altitude. Not absolutely precise for that purpose because pressure changes also come with changes in the weather, but it does provide a fair idea of elevation.

A compass may also be incorporated. This can be in the form of an electronic 3-axis compass which can read direction no matter what position the compass is in. Standard compasses require it to be oriented horizontally. A GPS compass may also be included which can only give a heading when you are in motion (but not when standing still).

Handheld GPS Versus Smartphone GPS Apps

For wilderness activities, adventurers who may be tempted to use the GPS capabilities of their smartphones, handheld GPS devices have several advantages. They are compatible with a wider range of satellite systems as opposed to Smartphones that are limited in access to GPS satellites and cell towers that may not provide coverage to all locations. There are fairly good quality mapping apps available for Smartphones which may require a fee. A major downside is that these can quickly use up battery power. Smartphones are also not as durable, robust, or waterproof enough to stand up to the elements as well as a handheld GPS.

Magnification and Objective Lens Diameter

In the description of binoculars and many times within the name, you’ll see a set of numbers such as 10 x 25 or 8 x 32. The first of these numbers indicates the magnification or number of times larger the objects appear to be compared to what can be seen with the naked eye. The second number describes the width or diameter in millimeters of the objective (or front) lens. An objective lens with a larger diameter lets in more light thus creating a brighter, clearer image.

Compact, easy-to-store, and carry binoculars are desirable for hiking expeditions. With that in mind, the objective lens will be far smaller in diameter than in larger models. As such, relatively less light will be let in making the images accordingly dimmer.

Binoculars with a magnification greater than 10x require a very steady hand or a tripod for stability. Otherwise, the shake will decrease the clarity of the image significantly.

Most hikers prefer compact smaller models with a relatively narrow lens diameter and smaller magnification to avoid shaky images.

Field of View

Field of view is a term that describes how wide the scene is that you can see through your binoculars. As magnification increases the field of view decreases.

For bird and wildlife observation or scanning the landscape, a wide field of view is desirable.

This information is usually given as the number of feet in width that can be seen at a distance of 1,000 yards (for U.S. users) or as an angle.

Eye Relief

The distance that your eyes should be from the ocular lenses (those you look through) is eye relief. At the proper eye relief distance, the image is clear. If the eyes are too close or too far the image is distorted.

Eye relief is a special concern for glasses wearers since glasses use creates a distance from the ocular lenses. When the eye relief is less than around 15 mm the image is compromised. Look for adjustable eyecups that allow for the correct eye relief distance without removing glasses. Note that many glasses wearers can get a good result just by removing their glasses without any adjustment to the eyecups.

Exit Pupil Diameter

Exit Pupil Diameter is an indicator of the amount of light that passes through the binoculars. The more light that can enter, the brighter the image will appear. It is calculated by dividing the objective lens (the front lens) diameter by magnification. So if you have 8 x 21 binoculars, the exit pupil diameter is 2.625. This is relatively low indicating that these binoculars will not be best in a low-light environment.

With compactness a major feature of hiking binoculars, many models will have relatively low exit pupil diameters. If you are planning on using them in low-light situations, your best bet is to look for a model with a larger exit pupil diameter.

Weight and Size

For hiking it is important to keep the weight burden low and for the binoculars to be small and compact enough to be stowed easily and conveniently. The models reviewed here fall into the mid-size and compact range.

Lens Coating

As light enters the lenses of binoculars it can be reflected with some of the light lost resulting in a loss of image clarity. Applying a chemical anti-reflective coating to lenses reduces reflection resulting in a clearer image.

Several levels of lens coating are available including:

Coated: one or more lens surfaces are coated
Fully Coated: all-glass lens surfaces separated by air have an anti-reflective coating
Multi-Coated: one or more air-to-glass lens surfaces have more than one layer of anti-reflective coating
Fully Multi-Coated: all air-to-glass lens surfaces have more than one anti-reflective coating

Water and Fog Proofing

When hiking there are opportunities for binoculars to get wet if there is precipitation or contact with a stream or body of water. Look for models that have O-ring seals to prevent the entry of moisture.

To avoid steaming up in humid conditions which can eliminate any visibility, models that are nitrogen purged are effective. This means that the air inside has been replaced with nitrogen which is inert and cannot “fog up”. Argon is another inert gas that can be effective in the same way but is more expensive.
