Boat Trailer Tongue Jack Buying Guide
Do I Need a Boat Trailer Tongue Jack?
If it isn’t yet clear, the boat trailer tongue is the portion at the front that you attach to your vehicle when you want to tow it. The boat trailer tongue jack is a tool used to lift the tongue so that you can place it onto the hitch on the vehicle.
Without a jack, you would need to do this manually. If this is possible for one or two people to do, then you could choose to go without one. When your boat is quite heavy, you won’t be able to do the job without it. In either case, a boat trailer tongue jack can eliminate a lot of physical effort and make it a more comfortable and safe process.
Electronic or Manual
Trailer jacks can basically be categorized as electronic or manual. The manual version requires a certain amount of physical labor to operate but is designed for easy use. An electronic model requires little more effort than just setting it into position and operating a switch. Another major benefit is that they usually have a much greater lift capacity, with the disadvantage of being more expensive.
Wheel Versus Foot
Jacks can come fitted with a wheel or a foot. If your boat is light enough to be maneuvered around manually, you might prefer to have a wheel on the bottom of your jack to allow you to more easily roll your boat and trailer into position to hitch to the towing vehicle. Foot models are more suitable for heavier loads where you rely on the mobility of the towing vehicle to get into position to hitch up.
Lift Capacity
When selecting a boat trailer tongue jack, you need to consider how much weight it can bear. The wheels of the trailer bear most of the weight of the load and the jack only needs to be capable of holding up 10% to 15% of the overall weight. If your jack is rated with a lift capacity of 1,000 pounds, that means that it could actually support the weight of your trailer and loaded boat of 5,000 pounds or more.
Height
The jack needs to crank the trailer tongue high enough to mount on the hitch of the vehicle. Take an accurate measurement of the necessary hitch height and make sure the trailer tongue jack can achieve that level before making your purchase.
