For an exciting interaction with the great outdoors and the natural world, there are probably not many activities as intimate as kayaking. Whether fishing, shooting the rapids, getting a long-distance workout, or just taking an easy cruise across a calm lake, kayaking offers the full range of stimulation from relaxation to ultimate exhilaration. Now with top-quality inflatables, you can achieve much higher levels of convenience without sacrificing the durability and performance of hard-shell kayaks. Inflatables are lightweight, can be stored using a minimum of space, and carried in a bag. No roof rack is required for transport, nor do you need a garage for storage when not in use.
Aside from the convenience of inflatable kayaks, there are numerous other factors to consider when selecting the most suitable for your needs. Below 12 top models of different sizes, configurations, and budget levels are described with photos and videos. Afterward, there is a comparison table followed by a simple buying guide outlining important features and considerations.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know in the comments section at the bottom. I’d love to know your thoughts.

Best Inflatable Kayaks Comparison Table
Inflatable Kayak Buying Guide
There are a number of factors to consider in the selection of inflatable kayaks.
Materials
PVC is the most commonly used material for inflatable kayaks. It’s strong, lightweight can be easily folded and reused, and inflated to a relatively high PSI. Seams can be welded for a superior seal to gluing or stitching. Two other materials that are in use are Hypalon and Nitrylon. Hypalon is very rugged and heavy but doesn’t bend or flex which makes use of it for inflatables problematic and beneficial only for limited purposes. Nitrylon is more eco-friendly than PVC and is more puncture and scrape resistant, though again it is heavy and used mostly on the bottom or sides of the kayak where it will contact the bottom.
Weight
One of the greatest benefits of modern inflatable kayaks is that they are lightweight and easily portable. With PVC and aluminum for paddles making up the bulk of the weight, the total can be kept to an easy-to-manage weight.
Length
Inflatable kayaks range from around 7 feet for singles and up to 16 feet for tandem and treble models. The longer models will be harder to manage after inflating but they will be designed for 2-3 paddlers so there will be help getting in and out of the water.
Weight Capacity
When selecting your kayak you should bear in mind the weight of the person or people who will be using it and the gear that will be brought along, as well. Inflatable kayaks are all rated for maximum weight capacity. The models reviewed here have a weight capacity ranging from 220 to 650 pounds.
Seating Capacity
If you have a model designed for 2 or 3 people, keep in mind the weight capacity. Single paddlers often use kayaks rated for 2 or 3 if they have extra gear like a fishing tackle box or tent or they just prefer a little more room.
Self-Bailing Kayaks
Especially useful for whitewater rafting, when water gets inside, a self-bailing or self-draining system has valves in the bottom that allow the water to drain out. The best systems have one-way valves that allow water to flow out but not back in again.
Accessories
The best kayak packages have a number of items some of which are essential that need to be purchased if not already included.
- An efficient pump that quickly fills the kayak to the recommended PSI. A pressure gauge to measure the PSI is also handy.
- Double-sided paddles.
- Removable skegs are part of some systems. These are fins that help navigate in a straight line with less sideways slippage.
- Fishermen like to see rod holders which alleviate the necessity of constantly holding their rod(s).
- Life vests or PFDs (personal flotation devices) are often not included in the package and are essential for the safety of each person on board.
