Best Camping Hammock Buying Guide

Weight/Packed Size

One of the benefits of a camping hammock is the relatively low weight and small packed size making it easy to carry especially for a backpacker.  It depends on the materials used and how complete the package is, such as whether it includes a rainfly, mosquito net, or other accessories, but generally, it will come in lighter and more compact than a tent.

Dimensions

Most hammocks are designed with enough length for most individuals to be able to stretch out at full length with plenty of room to spare.  As for the width, most are designed as singles or doubles.  If you prefer more room, I suggest getting a double.  Also, keep in mind that if you don’t have experience sleeping with a partner in a hammock you will be in very close forced proximity that some people don’t find conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Weight Capacity

Each hammock is rated by the manufacturer for weight capacity.  The nylon and polyester materials are almost universally pretty sturdy but you don’t want to overburden them.  Common sense also mandates that trees or supports used need to be strong enough, as well.  Give them a little test before settling in for the night.

Suspension

Not all hammocks come with a suspension system.  This usually consists of straps and carabiners to attach the hammock to trees or supports.  Manufacturers usually point you to compatible models that will do the job and the pricing is not usually high.

Accessories and Features

For a true camping hammock that can effectively take on conditions, a number of features and accessories can enhance performance.

  • Mosquito Net – a tightly woven mesh that prevents mosquitos and other bugs and vermin from entering while still allowing for some ventilation.
  • Rainfly – a waterproof tarp or covering that prevents rain from reaching the camper.
  • Guylines – ropes or cords that can be attached to a rainfly that holds it in place in windy conditions.
  • Insulation – Most camping hammocks are made of lightweight, breathable nylon or polyester material that is best suited to warmer weather.  If you are going to be using your hammock when conditions are cooler, you can add quilts, sleeping bags, or pads available to enhance comfort levels for the conditions at hand.
