Best Towable Tubes Buying Guide
Capacity
Each model is designed to carry a certain number of people and has a maximum weight capacity. There are some designed for one only, but most can handle a range such as 1-2, 1-3, or 1-4. The more riders and overall weight onboard, the larger the tube. All models will have handles and riding locations built in to cover the recommended maximum number of riders. If you add beyond that number, there won’t be enough handles and the system can otherwise become overburdened with weight and unsafe.
Quality Materials and Construction
Whenever you are out on the water safety is a major concern. You want to be assured that the design, materials, and construction techniques used are as reliable as possible.
The air bladders should be made of heavy gauge PVC for durability. Depending on the design of the tube there will usually be 1 to 3 air chambers each with its own inflation/deflation valve. The best material to cover the bladder(s) is usually denier nylon, although there are grades of polyester that have advantages. The commonly used thicknesses are 420 and the twice as thick 840 for denier nylon.
The best use double-stitching and some finalize the seal by welding the seams.
Inflation
A fully inflated tube has a firm, slick surface that will skim over the water most effectively. Unfortunately, most models don’t provide psi indications to give you a solid way of measuring. You have to eyeball it. If it is underfilled, movement is sluggish and riders sink into the structure.
Handles
The handle mounting area is a source of potential weakness in the structure. Top models have taken measures to reinforce the attachment. They should include knuckle guards which consist of padding around the handle area that will protect your hands and knuckles from getting scraped or bashed as the tube caroms off the wake.
Padding
There are points of contact between riders’ knees, elbows, and other body areas with the tube. The best tube designs have incorporated EVA padding to those spots to cushion for safety and comfort.
Towing Points
This is a high-stress area and should be durably constructed as most manufacturers have done. Look for systems that enable quick and easy methods to hook up. Some models have two towing points that enable turning the tube 180 degrees to create a different experience, for example going from a seated position in one direction to a kneeling chariot-style position from the other direction.
