Hello,
I am a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. Do you think I need more training than that to use a hookah system to dive?
A friend of mine and I would like to do some exploring in the Gulf of Mexico where we have heard there are some remains of wrecks in water about 50-60 feet deep. Is a hookah system suitable for that?
Thanks.
Hey Ryan,
Thanks for your questions.
The PADI AOW is plenty to get you started with a hookah system. Before you go in for a dive you’ll need to check out the system and make sure you know how to use it. I suggest to find a pool to check yourself out in. Equipment-wise, though, it can be seen as easier to use than the more cumbersome gear of scuba. You’ll need to make sure you are weighted properly, as you would with scuba, but you most likely will not be using a BCD with hookah. Following the dive tables and using a safe ascent rate, etc. is the same. It would be good to have a redundant system, like the spare-air kit, as a back-up. Of course diving with a buddy is optimal.
Exploring in water 50-60 feet is quite suitable for hookah. It is always advisable to have some surface supervision of the compressor, but in calm seas in relatively shallow water cruising the bottom with a metal detector and/or spot light, a floating hookah set-up is an excellent way to go. A friend of mine does exactly that with a Brownie’s Hookah system.
If you have any other questions, please let me know. I hope you can follow in Mel Fisher’s footsteps (finprints?).
Good luck!
Joe
Diving is a fun loving hobby but it can be rather dangerous if you do not know how to manage it.
Therefore, choosing a reliable and safe diving system is very important.
I like your review on those 4 models which you have selected here, but in particular I prefer gasoline powered model and I would consider Airline R260-4. It has long history of manufacturing experiences since 1999, and this is important for me in considering safety as my number 1 criteria.
The reviews on Amazon website seem very positive and I would recommend others to consider this Airline system.
Thanks a lot for your comments and opinions. I think you’re right that Airline has a great reputation for reliability. If you have any other comments or perhaps questions, please let me know.
Regards,
Joe
