Stand Up Paddleboard for Yoga Buying Guide
Stability
Stability is a key factor when performing yoga exercises on the water. If you can’t maintain balance, it will be difficult to impossible to do not to mention finding yourself getting wet more than you would like. Wider, thicker boards with broader noses are best to facilitate stability. Shorter boards are great for maneuverability but for yoga, you are more concerned with having space on the board to execute poses and room to move when you are on your feet. As a rule of thumb, a 10’ to 11’ length is sufficient for most.
Weight Capacity
How much weight your board can safely handle is published by the manufacturer. If you overload it, stability will suffer as will safety in general. You should plan for your body weight, any baggage and accessories, and riders. The board should have a capacity of at least 20% greater than the weight you want to load. Very experienced paddlers and ySUP practitioners can get away with a little bit larger load.
Deck Padding
Paddleboards typically have a pad on top which helps to get a good grip to avoid slipping. It is often textured and made of EVA foam which has a degree of softness that is much more comfortable especially when posing or exercising. The best boards for yoga have 75% or more of the board covered with the pad so that you can comfortably make use of as much of the board as possible.
Fins (or Skegs)
The fins on the back of the bottom of paddleboards help in tracking or keeping the board going in a straight line when paddling. Many boards suitable for yoga have one single long fin sometimes with 2 shorter fins on the side. Some or all of them may be removable. Of primary concern when paddling from place to place, fins also will help to keep the board from blowing around in the wind when stationary for exercises.
Inflatable versus Solid-Body Paddleboards
Inflatable boards have the big advantage of being light and folding up into an easily portable bag when deflated. If dropped or when traveling over rocks they are not easily dinged or scraped. Most are made of durable PVC with quality stitching. Historically they were not as rigid as solid boards but today that is not generally true.
Solid-body or rigid boards usually have a foam core and are covered with epoxy or fiberglass making the surface hard and slick. Often times they have better glide and performance cruising through the water which is not your major concern for a yoga board. They are more unwieldy and difficult to transport requiring more space.
Accessories
Paddles – A good paddle makes a big difference. The best are lightweight and adjustable with carbon the lightest and most durable material followed by fiberglass. Most yoga paddleboards come with an accessory package that includes a paddle. It is worth considering the quality of it or whether you would like to purchase one separately. For a detailed description of SUP paddles and the top models to consider, check here: SUP Paddles
Leash – This can help you keep track of your board in case you fall off. One is often included in the accessory package but can be purchased at a modest price separately.
Carry Bag – For an inflatable board, a bag to carry it in is a major consideration. Most deflated boards are fairly small and can be transported in a bag with a carry handle, shoulder strap, or backpack-style straps comfortably. For larger models, a bag with wheels can save a lot of effort.
Inflation/Pump – Inflatable paddleboards will generally include a hand pump in the package. Some are more efficient and faster. Most boards will inflate in 5-15 minutes. If that seems like a bit of a burden, you could consider purchasing an electric pump.
Anchors – If you are in windy conditions or there is water movement, a paddleboard anchor can help you to maintain your position. You will not likely find one included in the package with the board.
