Hobie Mirage Eclipse Dura 10.5 Pedalboard
The Hobie Mirage Eclipse Dura 10.5 is kind of a paddle board without a paddle.

The whole drive system can be easily mounted and removed as a piece and the board can be paddled like a standard SUP.
The Dura model is the sturdier of the two that Hobie offers and can actually zip through the water at a reasonable pace. Check out the video below.

- Single fin rudder
- Mirage drive system
- Aluminum alloy handlebars with rudder controls for steering
- EVA deck pad for traction
- Bow and stern carry handles

Stand-Up Paddle Board Comparison Table
Stand-Up Paddle Board Buying Guide
Solid versus Inflatable Construction
- Inflatable stand-up paddle boards (iSUPs) offer great advantages for storage and portability. When deflated they pack into a bag and can be kept in a closet or car trunk. They can’t be chipped or dented when bumped or dropped and are generally less expensive.
- Solid stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) generally have a lower center of gravity which makes them more stable. They also can be configured in a greater variety of hull types for specialized activities and are more streamlined for more efficient performance. They also obviously are more difficult to transport and store.
Materials
Solid and inflatable paddle boards come in a variety of materials. Durability is a major factor along with weight and performance.
- Solid boards can be hollow or have a foam core. Two common materials for the core are EPS (extruded polystyrene) or polyurethane foam. The core can be wrapped with fiberglass and epoxy or include other plastic or even organic materials like the bamboo used in the Crazzie model reviewed above.
- Inflatable boards are usually made of PVC or other especially durable plastic. They are often more durable than solid models being more resistant to dings and bumps.
For a further discussion of the comparison between solid and inflatable paddle boards, please check out this article: Inflatable Vs Solid SUP
Length
The length of the board is important to consider based on the activities planned. Here are some general guidelines:
- Short (less than 10 feet) – These will be more maneuverable but slower and suitable for surfing, yoga, and beginners or children.
- Medium (10-12 feet) – Most paddlers will find this a comfortable length, especially beginners. It is also a good platform for yoga, fishing, smaller waves, and recreation.
- Long (12 feet or more) – Generally these will be best for touring or racing. They will track better but be harder to turn. The Isle Megaladon 15-footer reviewed above is an exception as it is an especially wide model set up for many riders.
Width
Most stand-up paddle boards are around 32 inches in width. Wider ones will have increased stability which can be useful for beginners and fishermen. Narrower models will be faster but sacrifice some stability. This can be good for touring or covering longer distances.
Weight Capacity
For each model, the maker will publish a weight capacity. This is a guideline that can be stretched by experienced paddlers. Beginners and the less experienced should probably stick to the recommended capacity as the board could become difficult to paddle or unstable.
