Best Wakeboard Life Jacket Buying Guide
Types
For use in wakeboarding, life jackets can be divided into two main categories, competition and US Coast Guard (USCG) approved versions.
- Competition models, or comp vests, are designed for a superior range of motion and flexibility for doing the stunts and tricks of competition to be used by experienced wakeboarders. They are lightweight and typically aren’t the most buoyant models. Also, they are not approved by the USCG.
- The USCG has a system of classification with 5 types based on usage and buoyancy. Type III is the classification that wakeboarding life jackets fit into. These are heavier and thicker than comp vests and require a buoyancy of at least 15.5 pounds. Here is an article with further information: USCG PFD (Personal Flotation Device) System
Size and Fit
For effective performance, a wakeboard life vest should have a body-conforming fit with good flexibility and be capable of staying firmly in place upon impact with the water. You want flexibility and range of motion for pulling off stunts and it can be inconvenient or dangerous if the jacket pulls off or otherwise malfunctions after a high-speed collision with the water.
A good design with a secure closure system of adjustable straps and/or zippers is a start. Many jackets have features to add to flexibility and a good fit to your body shape like stretch panels, and segmented panels.
Men, women, and children have different body contours and the best-fitting models are specifically designed for each. The manufacturers usually offer substantial details for you to examine which can aid in selecting the best fit. Buying online, there is often customer feedback that also can help with this issue.
Materials
Most wakeboard life jackets incorporate neoprene into the construction due to their buoyancy, comfortable soft feel, and tested durability. For linings and surface areas, nylon or polyester is often used. These are also durable, lightweight, and dry quickly. All of these materials are flexible and capable of creating a snug fit.
Manufacturers are always looking for an edge and use improved variations of these as they are developed. Core materials can also be made of buoyant PVC foam or variations like O’Neill’s “Hyperlite.” Another modern natural fiber, “Biolite,” is another eco-friendly product used in O’Brien jackets.
