Best Rain Gear for Fishing Buying Guide
Waterproofing
When researching rain gear for fishing the word “waterproof” is one of the keys. If it is described as “water-resistant” that indicates there is a possibility in a strong rain that water will permeate it.
There is a range of fabrics and coatings that can form a waterproof cover but that is not the only factor.
If the seams are not watertight then you can get wet. The best to look for are welded, ultrasonic, or taped seams.
Other potential weak points are zippers, pockets, cuffs, and the neck/hood area. All need some sort of mechanism built-in to make the seals watertight. Zippers can have covers or storm flaps. Pockets can have zippers with such precautions, as well. Cuffs and hoods can be constructed that have seals and closure methods like drawstrings that minimize any exposure. Any place you see an opening in the fabric, look for some sort of backup to keep the water out.
Breathability
Breathable Fabrics – A breathable fabric can be waterproof but still allows for any sweat vapor you develop inside to be transferred to the outside by the colder drier air that can attract it. Perspiration is prevented from soaking you and the resulting potential for discomfort. This is especially useful if you are active and prone to sweating.
Nonbreathable Fabrics are more suitable if your level of activity is low. They also have the advantage of being cheaper.
Other Considerations and Features
Suitability for Fishing – You’ll be making a number of movements when fishing like casting, reeling, and reaching for your net and accessories. To best accomplish them a good range of motion and flexibility is ideal. The best rain gear designs include such features.
