Surfing Booties Buying Guide
Purpose
There are three primary reasons to use surf booties.
- Foot Protection – Along the shoreline surfers frequently encounter rocks, rubble, and other materials that can be uncomfortable or next to impossible to walk on without some sort of barrier to protect their feet. In the water, as well, are corals, stingrays, jellyfish, other wildlife, and the same sorts of rocks and terrain found along the shoreline that are difficult to dangerous to walk on.
- Warmth – Water temperatures can get near freezing in some pretty fine surfing areas. Without thermal protection, there is a risk of decreased circulation, numbness, hypothermia, or even frostbite. With booties available up to 7mm in thickness, most extreme conditions can be mitigated.
- Grip – In cold water, if your feet are warm they will have full sensitivity and a better feel for the board is possible. The best booties augment this by using designs and materials that aid in getting a good grip allowing a better sense of control and balance. Many surfers find booties useful even in warm water.
Materials, Construction, & Fit
For booties to be effective for traction and warmth they should fit well and snugly and have design features for adjustability, comfort, and durability.
Neoprene is the most common material used in surf bootie construction due to its warmth and durability. It is resistant to weather and temperature extremes and the bumps, scrapes, and abrasions inherent in surfing. A recent development in fabrication is dipping neoprene in latex. This increases flexibility and lightness.
For booties to provide warmth the thin layer of water between your skin and the neoprene is heated. With a snug fit with no gaps, there will be minimal water circulation. This will resist any new cold water entering.
Many booties also use a liner material that facilitates comfort.
Round Toe versus Split-Toe Booties
This refers to the configuration of the footbed of the booties.
- Split-Toe booties are divided into two sections with the big toe occupying one and the rest of the toes in the other. This allows the big toe to operate more independently of the others to achieve a greater sense of balance and a feel for the board. In addition, it locks your feet into a position inside the chamber so internal slippage and movement are minimized.
- Round Toe booties have all your toes occupying one big area of your footbed like a regular pair of shoes. This provides an easy augmentation of warmth much like when you use mittens as opposed to gloves. The disadvantage is more internal slippage is possible and a less secure grip on the board may develop.
Bootie Maintenance & Care
After each use, you should treat your surf booties much like you would a wetsuit. Rinse them thoroughly or soak them in freshwater to get rid of any salt or other debris. Special wetsuit detergents are also available to enhance the process. Let them dry thoroughly in a shaded area before storage to ensure no mold or bacteria can develop. Take care not to leave them in the sun as that can also damage the materials.
